Castelnuovo Berardenga
The town of Castelnuovo Berardenga is located on the southern borders of the Chianti Classico, less than 20 km from Siena. The area lies between the rivers Ombrone and Arbia.
The name Berardenga comes from the Count Berardo of franca lineage, who lived in the second half of the tenth century. The city was built as "Castel Nuovo? (New Castle) for Siena in 1366, as valuable outpost border.
It underwent the same fate of Siena, passing under the rule of the Medici Grand Duchy after 1555. From the original fort it remains today the tall tower in Piazza Petrilli, used since 1755 as clock tower.
Worthy to visit is also the Landscape Museum, with a big written and graphic documentation on the history of Siena's landscape. There is also an archaeological section preserving the archaeological finds from the municipal areas.
But perhaps what makes Castelnuovo Berardenga a tourist destination are its beautiful surroundings, dotted with castles and fortified villages, villas and churches.
Among the most famous: the village of San Gusm?,
the Certosa di Pontignano, the Montalto's Castle and Villa Arceno, to name a few. One of the oldest towns of Chianti housing the sumptuous Villa Chigi Saracini, surrounded by a lush park that we suggest you to discover.
